Larta Institute‘s Road to ECO at LA Climate Week took place on September 12th, 2024 at the Beehive in South Los Angeles. This event provided a platform for collaboration, idea-sharing, and the development of local climate solutions. Attendees had the chance to connect with climate organizations, policymakers, innovators, businesses, and changemakers from Los Angeles and beyond, while exploring the latest advancements in climate solutions.

Sustainable Futures: Creating Climate Resilient Communities

Larta Institute, LAEDC, Slate-Z, and SoLa Impact hosted an insightful event where attendees discoverd how our organizations are addressing this critical challenge through innovative initiatives and impactful work. This was not just a learning opportunity; it was a platform to voice thoughts, share community needs, and express what you hope local leaders will prioritize. ​

Speakers:

Nick Caton shared SoLa Impact’s vision for community sustainability through projects like The Beehive, which focus on creating innovative infrastructure solutions.
Jermaine Hampton highlighted Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC)’s approach to building sustainable communities by fostering collaboration among partners, driving economic development, and supporting workforce opportunities.
Vanesa Iniguez introduced South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z)’s South LA Eco Lab initiative, which aims to build climate-resilient economies with a focus on sustainable transportation and community engagement as they celebrate their 10th anniversary.
Emily Dinino showcased ThermoShade’s groundbreaking technology, which offers off-grid cooling solutions for urban areas, with potential applications for LA28 and other key initiatives.

Carlos Gutierrez and Gunjan Siroya from Larta Institute discussed the importance of data-driven sustainability, impact capital, and partnerships in developing community-focused solutions and climate-resilient infrastructure.

Our panelists delved into key themes, such as climate resilience, community-based impact metrics, corporate sustainability, and climate justice. They emphasized that sustainability must be both data-driven and community-focused, and stressed the need for collaboration to drive meaningful impact at all levels.
